ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN WARD OF HULL
United Kingdom, 1798-1849
An assembly of rowboats and ships,

with the full-rigged ship Amazon, built 1811 at Greenock, at the center, as well as a gaff-rigged cutter, a brig at anchor (probably the Maese, built at Yarmouth in 1841), the Hull-owned topsail schooner Dandie Dinmot, two gaff-rigged vessels and a brig under sail. Unsigned.

  • Provenance:
    Paul Mason Gallery.

    Reference:
For another illustration of the Amazon see Merchant Sailing Ships 1815-1850 by David MacGregor (1984).
Alternative versions of this scene, in oil, watercolor and lithograph, albeit with some of the vessels rearranged, can be found in the Hull Maritime Museum.

    Notes:
John Ward was born in Hull, the son of a master mariner of Hull. He was apprenticed as a house painter, a trade he worked at all his working life, even when he became a successful artist. He remains the best known and most admired of the Hull School of Marine Painters. Ward exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1840 and 1847 and at the British Institution between 1843 and 1847. He also made engravings of several of his own works, many of which were published.

Some of his most successful compositions are scenes of the Arctic, of which he had first-hand knowledge from sailing with a whaling fleet. He also enjoyed painting becalmed vessels, as seen here.
  • Dimensions: Oil on canvas, 28.5" x 32.5". Framed 36" x 40".
