ATTRIBUTED TO DAVID GILMOUR BLYTHE (PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, 1815 - 1865) LARGE FULL-BODIED EAGLE WOOD CARVING.
American, mid- 19th Century. Pine. Finely carved feathers and outspread wings, hooked beak, and spread talons, perched upon a rock as if just landed, on a square base with cut corners. 26.25"h. 45"w. 26.75"d.

Cataloguer's note: David Gilmour Blythe is more well known as a painter, but his first experience as an artist was as an apprentice to a wood carver. After a stint in the navy, Blythe returned to his hometown of East Liverpool, Ohio where he found work as an itinerant portrait painter. With no formal training other than his short apprenticeship, Blythe persisted in developing his artistic proficiency to become a well-respected and sought-after painter. Though wood carvings by Blythe are scarce, they are documented - including a large statue of the Marquis de Lafayette commissioned for the Uniontown, Pennsylvania courthouse.

Provenance: The Lifetime Collection of the Late Don Watkin (Washingtonville, Ohio).

  • Condition: Some age splits, breaks, and repairs.
