Attractive Special Order Antique Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter Manufactured in 1896, this is a highly attractive example of a deluxe Winchester Model 1886 rifle. The powerful Model 1886 was the first of multiple legendary lever action repeater designs that the iconic American firearms designer John Moses Browning produced for Winchester. These rifles were capable of handling many of the most powerful calibers of the period including the U.S. government standard .45-70 and the .40-82 W.C.F., making them a very welcome companion in the wilds of the American West. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .45-70 caliber with an octagon barrel and plain trigger when received in the warehouse on 13 October 1896 and shipped the following day to order no. 20713. This rifle was subsequently rebarreled with a Winchester factory produced barrel in .40-82 W.C.F. sometime during the period of use, with the barrel having quite possibly been fitted at the factory despite no "return and repair" date listed in the factory letter. The top of the barrel has the standard two-line Winchester address and the caliber marking at the breech. The upper tang has the model marking while the lower tang has the two-line patent dates and the serial number. The left side of the lower tang is marked "120 XX", with "120" repeated in the stock inlet and inside the buttplate. The left side of the upper tang is marked "25", which may be an assembly number or date for when the rifle was rebarreled. It is fitted with a beaded blade front sight (bead absent) and an elevation adjustable No. 24 notch rear sight. It is mounted with a very nicely figured forearm and pistol grip stock, both with factory H-pattern deluxe checkering, a hard rubber grip cap, and a crescent buttplate.
