An attractive late Victorian to early twentieth-century painted iron birdcage mounted on its original freestanding cast iron pedestal, presenting an elegant architectural silhouette with a domed cage, sweeping suspension arm, and richly ornamented square cast base. Executed in painted wrought and cast iron, the cage features a graceful arched top with fine vertical bars, integrated wire seed guards, and retains several period accessories including perch, feeding cups, mineral block, decorative painted bird figures, and an ornamental front panel. The original floor stand, terminating in an elaborately cast square base with foliate and beaded decoration, elevates the cage into a striking decorative furnishing rather than a simple utilitarian object. Freestanding birdcages of this form were fashionable in Victorian and Edwardian parlors, conservatories, and sunrooms, where exotic songbirds and canaries were displayed as symbols of refinement and domestic elegance. Today these examples are highly sought after as garden room accents, conservatory décor, retail displays, or architectural statement pieces. Its untouched surface, displaying an appealing aged patina with evidence of decades of use, contributes to its authentic antique character. An increasingly scarce form complete with its original pedestal stand. Overall height approximately 64–68 inches (estimate); cage approximately 18–22 inches wide (estimate).

  • Dimensions: approx. 59in"Tall
  • Condition: Visible age-related wear throughout including oxidation to iron surfaces, scattered paint loss, surface rust, accumulated grime, and minor bending to some cage wires consistent with long-term use and storage. Decorative accessories appear largely intact. The stand remains structurally stable with expected wear. The cage would benefit from a careful conservation cleaning if desired. Sold as found.
