Highly Attractive Antique Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in Highly Desirable .45-90 W.C.F. with Factory Letter Manufactured in 1891, this is a highly attractive special ordered example of Winchester's Model 1886 rifle, designed by John Moses Browning, chambered in the venerable .45-90 W.C.F. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .45-90 caliber with an octagon barrel, set trigger, and fancy stock when received at the warehouse on 14 September 1891 and shipped the following day to order no. 10531. These rifles found widespread popularity in the American West, where they were highly regarded for their robust and dependable nature. On the frontier, they were highly sought after by settlers for their defensive power and quick action. It was also a favorite of professional hunters, particularly in the most powerful calibers such as .45-90 W.C.F., which was more than capable of downing essentially any large game in North America. This rifle has the attractive casehardened receiver that was standard on the model until around 1901. The top flat of the barrel has the two-line address and the caliber marking at the breech, while the model marking is on the upper tang, and the patent dates and serial number are on the lower tang. The left side of the lower tang is marked "264 XXX", with "264" repeated in the stock inlet and inside the buttplate. It is fitted with a Lyman "Hunting" beaded blade front sight, a period replaced blank filler in the rear sight dovetail leaving the index marking visible on the barrel, a peep sight mounted on the upper tang, a single set trigger, and factory pattern sling swivel studs on the forearm cap and bottom of the buttstock (not mentioned in the factory records). It is mounted with a very finely figured forearm and straight grip stock with a gloss varnish finish and a crescent buttplate.
