Desirable Antique Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Rare Documented Extra Length Barrel and Factory Letter Manufactured in 1892, this is a documented special order example of the lever action repeater design by the legendary John Moses Browning which was produced by Winchester and is in a very desirable, special order extra length, deluxe configuration. These Winchester Model 1886s were an immense upgrade in strength of action from the company's earlier toggle-link designs, and they were capable of handling the most powerful military and hunting cartridges of the day. These rifles gained immediate popularity, particularly in the American West, where their incredible firepower was a welcome companion to those braving the wilds of the frontier. The cartridges these rifles chambered were more than capable of handling essentially any game in North America as well as any human threats one might face. The included factory letter lists this rifle in .40-65 caliber with a 32 inch octagon barrel, set trigger, Rocky Mountain front and Lyman rear sights, and a checkered pistol grip stock when received at the warehouse on 17 December 1892 and shipped on 19 December 1892 in order no. 11638. This example has the desirable casehardened receiver which was only standard on this model until around 1901. It has standard markings as well as the assembly number "635 XX", with "635" repeated in the stock inlet, and the inside of the buttplate marked "634", which is likely simply a factory error given the one digit off proximity to the other assembly numbers. There is an additional "5" on the left of the upper tang. It is fitted with a "Rocky Mountain" blade front sight with platinum inlaid centerline, an elevation adjustable No. 22 notch rear sight, and a Lyman combination peep sight on the upper tang. It is mounted with a very nicely figured forearm and pistol grip stock, both with Winchester factory deluxe H-pattern checkering, an ebony insert in the base of the grip, and a crescent buttplate.
