The October 24, 1864, issue of the Boston Evening Transcript is a 4-page broadsheet newspaper published by Henry W. Dutton in Boston, Massachusetts. Printed during the brutal, closing chapters of the American Civil War, this issue went to press just two weeks before the critical 1864 presidential election between Abraham Lincoln and George B. McClellan. The Battle of Westport Aftermath: Breaking military updates focused heavily on the western theater. Just the day prior (October 23), Union forces won the Battle of Westport in Missouri—the largest battle fought west of the Mississippi River. Dubbed the "Gettysburg of the West," it shattered Confederate General Sterling Price's massive Missouri Raid, forcing his retreat. The Siege of Petersburg: Daily dispatches detailed the grueling, ongoing Siege of Petersburg and the defense of Richmond, Virginia. Northern readers were highly focused on General Ulysses S. Grant’s slow war of attrition against General Robert E. Lee. Sheridan's Shenandoah Triumphs: The paper carried celebratory details and local commentary surrounding Major General Philip Sheridan’s decisive Union victory at the Battle of Cedar Creek (October 19), which permanently broke Confederate control of the Shenandoah Valley.1864 Presidential Campaigning: Local columns were dominated by political notices, speeches, and fierce editorial debates rallying support for President Lincoln’s re-election over the Democratic platform.
