An original July 9, 1814, "Extra" edition of the Daily National Intelligencer is highly valuable, typically commanding between $150 and $350+ in the antiquarian retail market. Unlike standard daily issues, an "Extra" was a special broadside sheet printed outside the regular schedule to break urgent national news. This specific date carries an immense premium due to its critical timing during the War of 1812 and its connection to the defense of the U.S. capital. The Creation of the 10th Military District: On July 9, 1814, Brigadier General William H. Winder—who had just been appointed to command the newly created 10th Military District—wrote a vital address to the National Intelligencer. This extra edition publicized urgent government orders to rapidly organize local militias to protect Washington, D.C., and Baltimore from the looming British fleet. The Prelude to Destruction: This emergency issue hit the streets just six weeks before British forces successfully marched into Washington and burned the White House, the Capitol, and the National Intelligencer's own printing offices. Because the British intentionally targeted and destroyed the newspaper's archives that August, surviving July 1814 prints are exceptionally scarce. The Battle of Chippawa Reports: Extras printed during this exact week also carried the first urgent, breathless dispatches from the northern front, detailing General Jacob Brown's major tactical victory over British forces at the Battle of Chippawa on July 5, 1814.
