Etched Panel Colt Black Powder Frontier Six Shooter Single Action Army Revolver with Factory Letter This is a much sought after example of an etched panel Colt Single Action Army revolver. The barrel has the one-line address stamped on top, "44," indicating 44 WCF caliber, stamped on the underside and the etched panel "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" on the left side. This etched barrel panel marking was officially replaced by the Colt factory in the early 120,000 serial number range with the much easier to produce and larger roll-stamping. The left side of the frame is marked with the three-line, three patent dates, and the upper left front of the trigger guard is marked "44 CF." The ejector rod has a crescent head with small dished out area. The matching serial number is marked on the frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. It has a all nickel finish and is fitted with a one-piece smooth varnished walnut grip. The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with .44-40 caliber chambering and nickel finish when it was shipped to Schoverling, Daly & Gales of New York City on December 8, 1879, as part of a 6 gun shipment. The barrel length and type of stocks are not listed, which usually indicates 7 1/2 inches and walnut, respectively. Manufacturer: Colt Model: Single Action Army BBL: 7 1/2 inch round Stock: Gauge: 44-40 Finish: nickel Grips: walnut Serial Number: 53257 Class: Antique Condition: Exceptionally fine. The revolver retains 85% original nickel finish with the balance between a smooth gray patina and flaking. 90% original case colors remain on the hammer. Nearly all of the etched panel remains. The grip is fine showing high edge wear, some minor dings and scratches and retaining most of the original varnish. Mechanically excellent.
