The bulbous base narrows to a delicately flared neck fitted with a hinged pewter lid and handle, typical of late 19th-century table glassware designs produced by firms such as Gillinder or Atterbury. The contrast between the milky body and metallic top embodies the ornate domestic style of the Victorian breakfast or tea service. Rococo Scrollwork & Garlands: The heavy, raised embellishments around the body of the pitcher feature C-scrolls, S-scrolls, and hanging floral or leaf garlands typical of the Victorian Rococo Revival period (circa 1840–1870).Gilt Accents: Many of these opaline glass pieces originally featured cold-painted or fired-on gold leaf highlighting the raised edges of the scrolls. Over time, it is common to find these with only remnants of the original gilding remaining. Pewter or Plated Hardware: Authentic Victorian syrup pitchers are usually topped with a fitted pewter or silver-plated lid and pourer. The spring-loaded thumb lift mechanism was designed to neatly cut off the flow of sticky molasses or cane syrup at the breakfast table.
