Antique Burmese Narrative Panel Painting
c. 1880–1920, Burmese
This antique panel dates back to the late 19th century to early 20th century (circa 1880–1920).
Key Factors for Dating: The rounded characters are typical of Burmese script used on folk art, temple panels, and manuscripts during the late Konbaung dynasty and the British colonial era. Similar text panels found in regional communities often bear specific dates from the early 1900s written in the Burmese calendar.
Painting narrative stories (such as the Jataka tales or life of Buddha) on vertical wooden structural planks or temple shutters became highly prevalent during this period. The natural wood oxidation, insect micro-damage, and pigment fading strongly mirror authentic 100-year-old temple wood.
The elongated proportions of the figures, their traditional waist-cloths (longyis or sarongs), and the flat, stylized perspective match the regional transition into early semi-modern narrative paintings.
