ANTIQUE 1815 Treasury Gov Doc for Money Due & Expended On The National Debt. Signed in TYPE by U. S. Register Joseph Nourse. Signed in TYPE U. S. Register Joseph Nourse. ANTIQUE US Government Document removed from original published House or Senate volume. 1 Page Titled: "A General State Of The Several Stocks Transferred To The United States To The 31st Of December, 1814, The Interest On Which, By The Acts Of May, 1792, & The 3rd of March, 1795, Is Appropriated Of The Redemption Of The Public Debt." Large Paper Broadside (Printed On One Side), suitable for framing, 1 page U. S. Government printed Document, approximately 18 inches high X 22 inches wide. Consists of a table of money owed or paid by the US Government back to before the present Constitution. A fascinating look at US government finances under pressure of war at a time when there were no income taxes & other taxes were low, the politicians not yet having figured out how to squeeze blood from the working stone. Of interesting note: "In payment of certain balances which originated prior to the present Constitution" & "In payment for certain lands sold under certain act of Congress." This was a report from the US Treasury dated February 3, 1815.

The letter of transmittal to the House page is SIGNED IN TYPE by Register JOSEPH NOURSE (1754-1841) who was the first United States Register Of The Treasury. His career spanned forty years and six presidential administrations. He played a key role in administering the finances of the new Republic. He was elected Register in 1781, where he assumed responsibility for keeping the financial records and accounts of the new government. He also authenticated each piece of Continental currency by personally signing it. As Register of the Treasury, he worked closely with four administrations and early political leaders of the new nation. When Andrew Jackson was elected President in 1829, Joseph Nourse was forced from office under Jackson's infamous "Spoils System."
