Andrew Jackson
[Washington, DC], May 26, 1835
Andrew Jackson PSA Slabbed Bank Check Signed As Pres., Addressed to Surrogate Daughter & White House Hostess, JSA LOA
DS

A bank check signed by sitting 7th U.S. President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) as "Andrew Jackson" on the signature line. May 26, 1835. [Washington, DC] The unnumbered check directed cashiers at the Bank of the Metropolis in Washington, DC to pay $93.48 3/4 to "Mrs. E. Donelson." Partly printed and partly manuscript in Jackson's hand. Cancelled near the center with an x-shaped perforation which touches a few handwritten letters. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified. The "A" of Jackson's signature is affected by a repaired closed tear at the bottom edge. Expected wear including toning and isolated grubbiness to the corners. Repairs to the blank verso include: old adhesive tape, notably to a vertical tear near the center and to one of the edges; as well as isolated areas of professional restoration. The check measures 5.75" x 2.5". The slab measures 9.5" x 4.625" x .25". Comes with a JSA Letter of Authenticity, certification number YY03904, dated February 9, 2026.

President Jackson issued this check to his surrogate daughter Emily Tennessee Donelson (1807-1836), who served as acting First Lady at the White House off and on between 1829 and 1834. Emily was a niece of Andrew Jackson's wife Rachel Donelson (she was the daughter of Rachel's older brother John Donelson.) Emily married her first cousin Andrew Jackson Donelson (he was the son of Rachel's older brother Samuel Donelson.) Together, Emily and Andrew Jackson Donelson helped President Jackson during his two administrations in the capacity of hostess and presidential aide/private secretary respectively. The Jacksons considered Emily more than close kin by blood and by marriage; she was like their daughter. Sadly, Emily died at age 29 of tuberculosis after the birth of her fourth child in December 1836.

A note on the check. The Bank of the Metropolis, founded in 1814 as an alternative to the hated Bank of the United States, was favored by President Jackson during and after the Bank War. Jackson used the Bank of the Metropolis to disburse his personal funds as well as federal reserves.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
