Mediterranean, Levant and Roman, ca. 1550 BCE – 400 CE. Double-stranded necklace assembled from ancient beads spanning centuries of craft. Faience beads glazed in turquoise and blue mingle with carved stone and glass, in colors ranging from amber and ochre to deep cobalt. Shapes include miniature juglets, pyramids, and small animal forms alongside rounded and cylindrical spacers. Faience, a self-glazing quartz paste known to the Egyptians as tjehenet ("that which is brilliant"), was prized for its luminous surface and amuletic associations; wound and drawn glass beads reflect the sophistication of Mediterranean workshops. Small figural beads in the shapes of juglets, animals, and geometric solids often carried apotropaic or fertility associations, and Roman glassworkers, building on earlier Near Eastern techniques, produced beads in a wide range of colors through wound, drawn, and mosaic methods, traded widely across the empire. The ancient beads have been restrung on modern strands for wear. Size of longest bead: 1.1" L (2.8 cm L); of longer strand: 24" L (61.0 cm L).
