Exceptionally Rare and Historically Significant Mid-to-Late 19th Century Sauk (Sac) Beaded Native American Leather Scabbard
Provenance: Oscar Daring, Captain Wisconsin Volunteers, (1827-1913)

This museum-quality scabbard is an outstanding example of Great Lakes Woodlands material culture and artistic tradition. Handcrafted from supple, brain-tanned buckskin, the long piece features a highly distinctive, stylized curvilinear "wavy line" and abstract geometric design executed in vibrant glass seed beads. The beadwork employs classic Great Lakes colors, showcasing deep, dark elements that create an elegant contrast against the natural cream-colored hide. The top throat of the scabbard flares into a beautifully rounded, semi-circular flap embellished with a central beaded starburst or floral motif, flanked by extensive flowing leather fringe. The entire piece is structurally sound, showing incredible indigenous craftsmanship with tightly wrapped seams and traditional fringe detailing.

The historical significance of this piece is exponentially elevated by its association with Captain Oscar Daring (1827–1913). Serving with distinction in the Wisconsin Volunteers during the Civil War, Captain Daring spent a significant portion of his life in the Wisconsin territory—the traditional geographic homeland of the Sauk people before and during portions of the 19th-century relocation periods. Items of this nature with clear, unbroken family provenance linking back to 19th-century Union officers are vanishingly rare on the open market.

  • Dimensions: 49 x 6 x 1/4 in. (124.5 x 15.2 x 0.6 cm.)
