AMPHIBIOUS AND NAVAL ATTACK PLANS FOR OKINAWA
Important set of three 'Top Secret' operational and attack plans developed for the April 1, 1945 invasion of Okinawa, these plans issued as late as Mar. 10, 1945 and originally from the files of Adm. RICMOND KELLY TURNER (1885-1961), commander of the Amphibious Force in the Pacific theater. Turner was also responsible for the creation of the Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT) in 1942 that were an early precursor to the United States Navy SEALs. Of primary importance is an approx. 80pp. bound document 'Ships' Gunfire Support Supplement to ComPhibsPac Op Plan No. A1-45' and which bears Turner's name on the cover. The plan, which also includes nine fold-in charts and maps of landing beaches, includes an enormous amount of data. A small sampling includes: composition of battleship and cruiser fire support units; auxiliary attack vessel types and their squad compositions; an hour-by-hour chronology of the intended assault; preliminary bombardment instructions and smoke screen timing; LCVP and LVT routes and landing places; support vessel positions offshore; shore fire control, and much more intricate detail. The second document, 18pp. 4to., Mar. 4, 1945 is a printed change of orders, as well as an air support plan, air spotting for naval gunfire, air observation plans, and includes a schematic of the operation's command structure. The last document, 12pp. sm. folio, [undated, ca. March, 1945], is an appendix to the amphibious forces' air support plan, specifically setting forth for a huge array of types of aerial missions their call signs, to whom they will report, frequencies to be used, etc.
