[Americana] [May, Samuel J.] The Literary Union: A Monthly Magazine

"To redeem men from iniquity, to reform the vicious, to save the lost, will be the intention and tendency of any treatment, that true humanity, true Christianity approve..."

Syracuse, New York: J.M. Winchell, and W.L. Palmer, July 1850. New Series, Vol. II, No. I. First edition. 8vo. 94, (14) pp. Printed by T.S. Truair. Abolitionist and reformer Rev. Samuel J. May's copy, with manuscript on front wrapper: along left side, "S.J. May's article on Capital Punishment first published in the New York Tribune"; at top, "Rev. S.J. May"; along fore-edge, "Samuel J. May's only copy." Original stiff printed wrappers; scattered light foxing to text.

A fine example of abolitionist Rev. Samuel J. May's own copy of this literary magazine, featuring May's passionate article against capital punishment. "Capital punishment should be abolished, because it is cowardly to inflict it. The wretched men, who can be made to suffer it, are already subdued, already in the hands and at the disposal of the State. There is nothing more to be feared from them; and the safety of no one requires their death..."
This lot is located in Philadelphia.

  • Provenance: From the personal papers of American minister and abolitionist, Rev. Samuel J. May (1797-1871), thence by descent in the family
