[Americana] Engraved Centennial International Exhibition Stock Certificate

(Washington, D.C.): Bureau of Engraving and Printing, January 7, 1876. Engraved Centennial International Exhibition stock certificate (No. 8672), signed by President John Welsh and Treasurer Frederick Fraley, for James A. Haas & Co., for five $10 shares. Engraved by George W. Casilear. Laid down on japanese paper; toned; scattered spotting; repaired closed tears along edges. In mat with a replica printing of same certificate, and in frame. 16 7/8 x 20 1/4 in. (429 x 514 mm).

Scarce stock certificate for the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition, the first official World's Fair in the United States, held from May 10 to November 10, 1876. Featuring fine allegorical scenes, including depictions of laborers, Civil and Revolutionary War soldiers, gold prospectors, farmers, Native Americans, etc., as well as John Trumbull's painting of the presentation of the Declaration of Independence, figures such as Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and Ulysses S. Grant.

James Haas & Co., was a Philadelphia-based jeweler, watchmaker, and metal goods manufacturer. During the Exhibition they were commended for "character of finish and appropriate designs" for their metallic emblems.
This lot is located in Philadelphia.
