Addressed by Boone on verso of integral leaf, remnants of red wax seal at same. Creasing from old folds, very small scattered holes along same; later pencil inscription beneath letter, initialed "A.C.P." In green morocco slip case and chemise. Reproduced in Daniel Boone: Master of the Wilderness (p. 314, John Bakeless, 1939).

American frontiersman Daniel Boone writes to his business associate, Capt. Charles Yancey, about the settlement of a debt. As a result of his service in the Virginia militia in the American Revolution and earlier in the French and Indian War, Capt. Yancey was granted 1,000 acres of land in Western Virginia. Following the signing of the Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolution, Yancey partnered with Boone in order to identify and survey his land in order to make a claim to it. Their partnership soured after Yancey claimed that Boone did not record all of Yancey's land, and that he even retained more for himself than their original agreement had stipulated. Yancey subsequently filed a successful lawsuit against Boone.

The Colonel Marshall referred to above is Col. Thomas Marshall (1730-1802), surveyor of Fayette County, Kentucky. His son, also mentioned by Boone, is John Marshall (1755-1835), future Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
