Alvin A. White Factory Master Engraved and Gold Plated Colt Single Action Army Revolver This revolver was manufactured in 1965 and is consecutively serial numbered with the matching gun in the previous lot. It was engraved by "the unquestioned Dean of American gun engravers" Alvin A. White. He began engraving prior to the 1930s and was an in-house engraver for Colt in 1961-1976 and continued to be a commissioned engraver thereafter. His long career made him an excellent bridge between the early 20th century engravers and the master engravers of the 1960s and on. According to the chapter "Factory Engraved Postwar Single Action Army Revolves, 1956-1976" by Brichaux within Wilkerson's book, only three .357 Magnum SAAs were engraved by White. Two are listed as type "C" engraved with 4 3/4 inch barrels and blue finish indicating this revolver and the consecutive gun noted above are the only two of their type and two of only three total .357 Magnum revolvers engraved by White while in-house at Colt. Only 3 of his revolvers are also listed as having rosewood grips. White's script "AAW" signature is on the right side of the front strap. Engraving on .357 Magnum SAA revolvers is also scarce and desirable. It has 75% plus (type "C") coverage traditional American scroll and floral engraving patterns. The special ordered rosewood grips are numbered with the matching partial serial number on the inside. The matching numbers are also on the frame, grip frame, and cylinder. The marking are standard.
