The unfortunate and unnecessary supreme sacrifice was made on July 26, 1865, when Lieutenant Caspar Wever Collins, of the Eleventh Kansas Cavalry were killed, and Sergeant Amos J. Custard and twenty of his comrades were massacred by the Indians. Many versions of these two tragedies have been published, some of which are history; some tradition, some legend and romance, and a great deal imagination." (From author's foreword, p. iii)
