Alec Shanks (1904-1987), American-British, Gouache theatrical costume design, 'Mlle Mistinguett, Paris Qui Brille, Moulin Rouge' Signed lower left and named dancer and show. Paper 17 1/4 x 13 5/8'' Alec lived for a while in Harpenden, better known as a theatrical Costumier and set designer, notorious for going over budget. When approached about this, his famous remark was 'don't spoil the ship for a half penny of tar!' He had a thriving business in Covent Garden after being the first designer to have a fully nude woman on the stage at the Folies Bergere. He was also the producer of the Royal Command Variety Performance for many years. He employed ERTE on a number of occasions . His works are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Mademoiselle Mistinguett (Jeanne Florentine Bourgeois 1875-1956) was at one time the highest paid female performer in the world!
