ALASKA-CANADA (ALCAN) HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION PHOTO ALBUM
A rare and extensive photograph album detailing the construction of the 1,500 mile-long Alcan Highway. The Alaska Highway (Alcan) was built in 1942 in just eight months to connect Alaska with Canada and the contiguous U.S. during World War II. The album contains over 200 photos, ironically contained within a 14 x 9 in. leather album featuring scenes from Honolulu, and virtually all measure 3.5 x 2.5 in. Every aspect of the construction of the vital route is shown: bulldozing of roads through forests and swamps, field kitchens, housing from barracks to crude mud and wood huts, bridge construction, resupply by seaplanes and Dakotas, felling trees with axes, black troops involved in construction; snow conditions and dog sleds, men in camp and in the field, bears in the wild and kept as pets, and much more, as well as a blank sheet of period 'Alaskan Highway' letterhead. Overall fine condition. The Alcan was a massive 1,500-mile project, constructed for roughly $243 million (initial pioneer road), that faced immense challenges with terrain, permafrost, and winter weather, fundamentally connecting Alaska to the lower 48 states. The highway stretches from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to Delta Junction, Alaska. Over 10,000 U.S. Army Engineers, including several black regiments in order to create a supply route for military outposts and as a conduit for the CANOL pipeline and telephone lines.
