Unsigned. 19th century Provenance: Purchased from Great Western Auctions Glasgow, Scotland, Nov. 2014. Estate of Dr. David Ross, Glasgow, Scotland UK. Label on back of backing board: "Sir Henry Raeburn, picture (oil), Portrait of James Wardrop of Torbane Hill. Linlithgowshire, (see envelope for details) (S) David W. Bain". No envelope received with portrait. RAEBURN'S UK venues exceed one hundred. Conserved by Colin Post, Asheville NC, USA, Sir Henry RAEBURN (1756-1823) RA (Scottish) In the Manner Of SIR HENRY RAEBURN, His Life and Works by JAMES GREIG. LONDON: PUBLISHED BY "THE CONNOISSEUR (OTTO LIMITED). 1911: "Wardrep James, of Torbanehill, by Sir Henry Raeburn, R.A. This picture is a very fine replica of the beautiful and importallt portrait in the possession of the Wardrop family, and is said to have been painted when the sitter was 92 years old four or five years before Raeburn's death. It was the property of the late Dr Dye Brown, London, and is now in the possession of G. S. Davidson, Esq., 8 Kelvingrove Terrace, Glasgow." The original painting is in the collection of the Nationa Gallery Victoria, Australia. The National Gallery Victoria, Australia web site states "Collection of James Wardrop (1738-1830), Torbane Hill, Linlithgowshire and Edinburgh, until 1830; thenca by descent to the sitter's great-grandson, J. C. Wardrop. until 1911; from whom purchased, on the advice of Frank Rinder, for the Felton Bequest, 1924; arrived Melbourne, 1925." 36"H 31"W overall
