George Dewey (1837-1917) was a sailor who distinguished himself in the Civil and Spanish-American Wars. He joined the United States Navy in 1858 and would attain the rank of Admiral of the Navy by 1899. When war broke out between the United States and Spain in 1898, Dewey was commanding the Asiatic Squadron in the Pacific Ocean. Dewey’s forces routed the Spanish navy, sinking or capturing every vessel of the enemy forces with the loss of only one American life, at the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898. Dewey later participated in the U.S. invasion of the Philippines. Dewey’s military success was marked by the minting of the Manilla Bay naval service medal and the presentation of a Tiffany & Co. sword by President William McKinley (1843-1901). A variety of souvenirs, including this desk accessory, were manufactured to commemorate Dewey’s victory.
