Factory Engraved Abercrombie & Fitch Co. Retailed W. J. Jeffery Best No. 2 Mauser Bolt Action Rifle in .333 Jeffery Completed between 1913 and 1920 according to page of Nigel Brown's "British Gunmakers Volume One: London", and delivered to famed New York outfitter Abercrombie & Fitch Co., one of America's premier outfitters of the day and the exclusive retailer for W. J. Jeffery in the early 20th century. This rifle is a Jeffery "Best Quality" rifle and was the highest grade bolt action that they made at the time. The rifle is chambered for the .333 Jeffery, which was used in the period for all manner of game and even tested during World War I as a sniper cartridge for punching through German steel plates, a task which it readily achieved. The rifle was built with a blacked "Q.S." nickel steel barrel featuring a sleeved on beaded blade fore sight on an island base, an attachment point for a sling eye (broken but included), and a sleeved on five folding leaf express rear sight with leaves folding toward the muzzle. The barrel is marked "W. J. JEFFERY & Co. Ltd. 26 BURY STREET. St JAMES' LONDON. 24.676." and "NICKEL GUN BARREL STEEL/QS/TRADE MARK" ahead of the rear sight and "MADE EXPRESSLY FOR/ABERCROMBIE & FITCH Co. NEW YORK" behind the rear sight along with period Birmingham proof marks. The barrel is fitted to the blacked original single square bridge Mauser 98 action as ordered by Jeffery which still bears the original Oberndorf marking on the action wall and matching partial serial numbers on the components as well as beautiful, factory No. 2 executed, acanthus scroll engraving on the front receiver ring and the top of the rear bridge. The blacked straddle floorplate with Oberndorf bump and the inside-the-bow release trigger guard are also engraved with the lovely acanthus scroll and leaves. The rifle is fitted with an attractively figured and multi-point flat-top checkered pistol grip stock with horn forend tip and single screw grip cap, rear sling swivel, and a checkered steel trapdoor buttplate containing a spare firing pin with spring.
