A rare Victor Collette gravity pistol which has been delicately engraved with floral and scroll work motifs on the receiver and pommel. The wooden grip being masterfully fluted and carved with similar scrollwork motifs. Around the screw of the upper tang is the mark 'V. Collette / Brevete'. The underside of the barrel is marked 'VC868'. First introduced at the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, the gravity feed mechanism used in this pistol is Liege gunsmith Victor Collette's most famous work. At the top of the pistol is an open sided magazine tube which is accessed via a hinged cap near the muzzle, allowing one to load the rocket-ball style ammunition, similar to that used by the famous American Volcanic pistol. When placed in half-cock the breech block raises up, allowing one to tip the pistol back to receive one of the rounds in the now exposed opening, a lever on top being used to nudge the ball into place and seat it properly if necessary. When brought to full-cock the breech block automatically descends again, making the gun ready to fire. A sliding safety catch can be found behind the hammer. Bore: 10mm. Paris, France, 19th century.
