A remarkable personal walking stick associated with Leutnant Hans Kirschstein, Pour le Mérite recipient, Jasta 6 commander, and one of the most striking German fighter aces of the First World War. Kirschstein was among the brilliant but short-lived figures of Imperial German aviation. Born in Koblenz in 1896, he first served with the 3rd Pioneer Battalion before transferring to the German air service in 1916. He flew early bombing and reconnaissance operations with Flieger-Abteilungen 19, 256, and 3, earning the Iron Cross 2nd Class, before transferring to fighter aviation in 1918. Posted to Jagdstaffel 6 on 13 March 1918, Kirschstein rose with extraordinary speed, scoring 27 confirmed aerial victories in only a few months. His skill brought him the Iron Cross 1st Class, the Knight’s Cross with Swords of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern, and finally the Pour le Mérite — the famed “Blue Max” — awarded on 24 June 1918. Kirschstein’s aircraft were as distinctive as his career. He became known for machines painted in bold black-and-white striping, an “optical illusion” scheme intended to confuse enemy aim and which remains one of the most memorable personal markings of the German air war. On 10 June 1918, after only weeks at the front as a fighter pilot, he assumed command of Jasta 6. Barely a month later, on 16 July 1918, he was killed in a flying accident near Fismes, France, while returning from an aircraft repair depot — a sudden end to one of the most meteoric careers in the Imperial German Air Service. This walking stick offers a rare personal connection to the man behind the legend. Its association with golf adds an especially evocative civilian dimension, linking Kirschstein not only to the violent and glamorous world of First World War aviation, but also to the refined sporting culture of the officer class. Golf-related personal effects from named Great War aviators are exceptionally unusual, and this piece presents the collector with something more intimate than a medal group or photograph: an object of private use, taste, and leisure belonging to one of Germany’s notable fighter aces. A highly desirable named personal item connected to Leutnant Hans Kirschstein — Pour le Mérite winner, Jasta 6 commander, 27-victory ace, and one of the tragic young figures of the First World War air war.
