LARGE COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL ADELINE LEITZBACH MANUSCRIPTS c1930 Screenplays Drama American Film & Literature Poetry Mae West
Estimate: $100 - $250
Details: This lot includes the group of original manuscripts by Adeline Leitzbach shown in the corresponding image(s). These typed papers consist of unpublished dramas and screenplays, with (tentative) titles such as "The Crystal Globe: A Mystery Play in Three Acts," "The First Stone: A Drama in Three Acts," "Old Man Smith: An All American Comedy Drama," and "No Money Down!: A Farce Comedy in Three Acts, That Does Not Require a Sherlock Holmes To Solve It" (with author's signature on the title page). Theres is also a piece entitled "Hell's Back Door: A Melodrama" in a binder, with handwritten pages and corrections to the typed text. Another play, "Dollars and Sex: A Drama in Three Acts" may bear relation to the work the author did for plays by Mae West. Emily Wortis Leider in her book "Becoming Mae West" states "Playwrights J. J. Byrne and Adeline Leitzbach deserve more credit than they got for their contributions to "Sex" and "The Hussy"...Sometimes, as with Adeline Leitzbach, the scriptwriter developed situations and characters West supplied (The title of the script of "The Hussy" lists Mae West and Adeline Leitzbach as co-authors. Crossed out are the words "Dramatized by Adeline Leitzbach. From material supplied by Mae West.")." (p.140). Also present in this collection is a string-bound booklet, in orange wrappers, with handwritten poems, and a page of poetry, also handwritten, signed by the author laid in. There is also a manuscript for what appears to be a short novel. It should be noted that a substantial number of these works are not bound and are offered as loose pages. Some are bound, and in wrappers. The texts may have corrections and commentary.
