At the end of the 19th century, a Petach Tikva resident, Yitzchak Goldenhirsch, heard that the manager of the Austrian post in Jaffa is interested in opening a branch in Petach Tikva. He expressed his willingness to help the Austrian on three conditions: 1. The Austrian consulate will issue a Hebrew Stamp for Petach Tikva, which will serve for internal and external mail. 2. There will be a special postmark for Petach Tikva. 3. Half of the revenues of the post office will be transferred to the council of the Moshava and the Jewish National Fund. The Austrian agreed and at the end of 1908 a sketch of a stamp was ordered from an artist whose name, unfortunately, was not registered.
The artist did a perfect job, considering the graphics of those days: the colorful, attractive stamp nicely symbolized Petach Tikva: a plow, green fields and a blossoming orange tree. Its price was 14 Farot (a Turkish coin) and at its head, the name 'Petach Tikva' (in large Hebrew letters) was displayed.
Envelopes with the Petah Tikva Stamp and the special stamp, are very rare.
