Details: This lot consists of the American Civil War correspondence shown in the accompanying images. These four letters, each in their original addressed, stamped envelopes, are between David W. Howell and Abram A. Howell, a Union army musician stationed at Fort Federal Hill in Baltimore, as well as other war-related correspondence occurring between 1861 and 1864. The letters discuss family debts, wartime activities by family members in service to the Union, and other war-related business.

Excerpts from the letters read as follows:

First Federal Hill Baltimore

Dear Father,

We received your letter this morning informing us of the draft. Well sure enough David has got to come at last. Well now dave will make a Good soldier and some of the others I think that fife Parrish will make a Good one that is if he comes at all. Well there is dome Boming I got the men from around there I will this Regiment out to its full numbers.that is a good thing for the Boys that are draftedif they can get in this Regiment. Well enough about that. Now I will tell you something about our inside effort Harpers Ferry. One started about 4 o'clock in the morning. I got there about 7 in the evening and laid down on a side hill and I slept like a log. Then we marched upn the light in the morning and staid (sic) about. We make then are smacked down after the blats and staid (sic) there a couple of days and there got marching orders for Baltimore and my there awe are with [illegible] all Blacked [illegible] and our shoes scoured and White Gloves. Dear brother will you state in your letter how much my whole debt to you foots up leaving the Iowa postage place. Clear + how much also will clear the Postage place alone -- if we can clear both I want to do it. If not both; then the Iowa land must be sold + leave a home in P for the family evry [sic] letter I get from home urges me for the information. if you choose you may write Nancy and let her know how it stands. If she will be the better satisfied Affably yours, A.A. Howell.

Dear brother I left Buffalo Sat March 19th + left in the hands of Mr. Joel Lines $30, to be [illegible] to you without delay.
After arriving here a day or two I wrote you inquiriing whether you had r.ed (sic) the money as I directed, requesting immediate answer which I have not yet had.
Will you write + let me know; I have just had a little more to expect to you as soon as I go to town -- if you have not r.ed the $30 from Joel Lines you must see to it; he resides in Buffalo has liquor store in 142 Seneca Street, you can write to him or call on him at my expense if you have not r.ed the money.
I am 4 miles from Washington + go to town when I wish. I have been through the capitol building + all the other places of interest in town the beautiful Potomac is before us with it thousands of all class [illegible] + the rolling as far as eye can behold is crossed with a long field of tends _ foots given are unbroken view of the American Military world. I will not attempt a [illegible], for I am bewildered int eh same & I will send some money home for you to treat the Band with it is a [illegible] wrote. You may treat with that if you are a mine w and I send 2 dollars home to Daddy and sis Give one dollar to S[illegible name] and one to [illegible] as kept. I wish on you are a [illegible].
