Egypt, New Kingdom to Late Dynastic period, ca. 1550–332 BCE. A trio of faience necklaces restrung from ancient Egyptian beads, their surfaces in the characteristic blue-green of copper-fired quartz frit. Faience, called tjehnet by the Egyptians, was prized for its resemblance to turquoise and lapis, materials associated with rebirth and the heavens.
Such strands adorned the living as jewelry and accompanied the dead as amuletic protection, their color invoking fertility, regeneration, and the Nile. Size of necklace: 28" L (71.1 cm L); tubular bead: 0.75" L (1.9 cm L).

Provenance: ex-David Zahler collection, acquired between 1975-2010
