Details: This lot includes the group of Notgeld bills shown in the corresponding image(s). "Notgeld" was small-format paper money issued by the magistrates of various German cities during and after the First World War as "temporary war-relief money." These often feature culturally significant images or motifs, or offer tribute to a particular group or service. So that one has in this collection a depiction of the Sömmerda firearms factory in Thuringia, the shoe factory of Weissenfels in Saxony-Anhalt, the health spa at Friedrichsbrunn, with a portrait of Frederick the Great, a commemoration of the arrival of Martin Luther at the Wartburg (the place where he translated the New Testament of the Bible into German), and medieval scenes and a knight errant riding to Burg Greifenstein in bills issued by Bad Blankenburg. It should be noted that a number of these pieces have unique decorative designs, such as the expressionistic views of Erfurt by Alfred Hanf, and a six-piece set issue by the town of Zerbst with each adorned with a letter from the name of the town. There are over 250 pieces.
