Borneo, ca. 19th century. Finely carved from bone in the form of a stylized bird. The head is rendered with a long, pointed beak, while the metal hinge serves as the bird's eye and secures the central pivoting blade. The hinged handle is engraved with intricate scrolling motifs and bordered by finely notched edges. The bird's body tapers gracefully and is ornamented with subtle relief-carved, pointed breasts, integrating anthropomorphic and avian elements in a characteristic Dayak design. The surface has developed a warm yellow-brown patina, smoothly polished through prolonged handling and age, attesting to its antiquity and use. Custom base. 5" L × 2" W (12.7 cm L × 5.08 cm W).
