Borneo, Indonesia, ca. 19th century. Carved bamboo handle fitted with a wood and iron alloy blade used for slicing tobacco leaves. The handle is skillfully fashioned in the form of a stylized fish or whale with a gracefully curved tail, reflecting the imaginative zoomorphic designs characteristic of Dayak craftsmanship. The wooden elements display a warm brown patina developed through age and handling. Custom base. 4" L × 4" W (10.16 cm L × 10.16 cm W).
