East Asia, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A carved stone jar in Shang-style revival form, the rounded body rising from a short foot and fitted with a domed lid topped by a bud-form finial, a silhouette echoing early bronze prototypes prized by Qing collectors. The jar is encircled by incised geometric bands, including chevron patterns at the shoulder and lid, and a lower register of raised bosses in rows. Twin loop handles at the shoulders hold suspended stone rings. Size: 1.6" L x 2.9" W x 4.5" H (4.1 cm x 7.4 cm x 11.4 cm)

Subtle tonal variation across the pale stone surface, ranging from warm honey to deeper russet inclusions, enhances the sculptural depth and lends the piece a tactile, organic presence. Archaistic works such as this reflect the Qing dynasty fascination with antiquity, scholarship, and the revival of classical forms, often collected as symbols of refinement and historical continuity. Both decorative and contemplative, this lidded jar stands as a graceful homage to China’s ancient past, reinterpreted through the lens of 19th century taste.
