North America, United States, American, ca. 1875–1899 CE. A baluster-form sterling muffineer sheathed almost entirely in dense repousse ornament. Swirling acanthus scrolls and full-blown chrysanthemum blossoms roll across the body in high relief, their petals and foliage chased with fine detail against a matted ground, so that the plain neck reads as a moment of calm amid the exuberance. The domed, pierced cover carries the same rolling foliate vocabulary, its perforations arranged to sift sugar or cinnamon over muffins, scones, and other baked goods at the Victorian table. Such casters were prized dining accessories in prosperous American households of the Aesthetic era, when naturalistic repousse in the so-called "art" taste was at its height. The generous silver quality and hand-finished chasing mark this as a quality piece of late nineteenth-century American manufacture. Size: 3.25" D x 4.5" H (8.3 cm D x 11.4 cm H); silver quality: 91.7%; weight: 153.8 grams.

Fuchs & Beiderhase operated in New York City during the final quarter of the nineteenth century, one of many specialist silver firms supplying the retail and wholesale trade during the American sterling boom. Their output favored the richly repousse floral and scroll patterns fashionable in the 1880s and 1890s, executed in the .925 standard that had by then become the norm for American makers. A muffineer, sometimes called a sugar caster or dredger, dispensed powdered sugar, cinnamon, or nutmeg through its pierced dome, a small luxury of the well-appointed Victorian breakfast and tea service.
