1942 HAWAIIAN BOMBER COMMAND UNIT HISTORY
Full copy of 'The Hickam Bomber', a 1942 unit history of the Hawaiian Bomber Command based at Hickam Air Field, Honolulu, which had been heavily damaged during the Japanese attack of Dec. 7, 1941. The approx. 100pp. 4to. annual is filled with reminders of the devastation wrought the previous year, as well as optimistic images and text showing the restaffing and rebuilding of the shattered Hickam facilities. The album opens with a poem ending: 'Let the Nipponese remember this, As they cringe beneath the sky - As Hickams' flaming vengeance, For You, the first to die!'. There also appears a large photo and message to the troops from Lt. Gen. Delos Emmons, who replaced Gen. Walter Short ten days after the attack. There are dozens of photographs and much text illustrating the various units attached to the airfield's operations, with five pages at the center of the book revisiting December 7th. Hero Lt. Welch and others are photoed, and there appears an extensive list of Silver Star and Purple Heart recipients in the unit. Covers slightly worn and a bit soiled, else very good.
