Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. 1940s CE. A delicately hand-carved wooden comb with painted details and incised motifs. The singular piece of wood is likely bamboo, and the profile of the comb is curved with the long teeth tapering to pointed tips. The handle of the comb has lovely geometric shapes on the front side that are highlighted with chalky white and black pigments. A small perforation through the top of the handle allows for suspension or additional ornamentations. Large combs were important adornments for both men and women that were worn as status symbols and the incised designs sometimes indicate clan affiliations. Size: 8.75" L x 3.75" W (22.2 cm x 9.5 cm); 11.75" H (29.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Atlanta, Georgia, USA collection; ex-Artemis; ex-private Newport Beach, California, USA Collection
