Excellent and Scarce 1939 Production U.S. Navy Colt Model 1911A1 Semi-Automatic Pistol Originally ordered in October of 1938, these Colt 1911A1 pistols represent one of the final steps in the full transition from the 1911 to the 1911A1. Due to the nature of the military supply chain, the Navy had to place its pistol orders with Springfield Armory, which then had to sort out the details with both the Navy and Colt, a process that would see actual delivery to the Navy Depot at Sewalls Point, Virginia delayed until November of 1939. Among the changes from the "Transitional 1911A1" were minor adjustments of the hammer, bringing that component closer to the original 1911 configuration. Fixed sights, with the two-line, two-date patent and address markings on the left side of the slide divided by the Rampant Colt, "P" on the top, and a matching serial number beneath the firing pin stop. The frame bears the 1911A1 nomenclature on the right side, with "P/H" proof/inspector marks around the magazine catch and "60/VP" and "99" on the trigger guard, as well as an "R" in an oval next to the disconnector pin. Fittings include a flat top rear sight, wide knurled hammer, slide catch, thumb safety and arched mainspring housing, long grip safety, fully checkered grips, unmarked magazine, and a full blue "COLT 45 AUTO" barrel with a "P" on the lug and a small "G" on the underside. Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1911A1 BBL: 5 inch round Stock: Gauge: 45 ACP Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 716349 Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Very fine, with 95% of the restored blue finish, showing some scattered mild pitting (both under and on top of the blue), a few hints of plum patina, and minor handling marks overall. Some lowering of the front sight has occurred which is blued over. The grips are very fine, with a few light dings on the checkering. Mechanically excellent.
