1938 Portrait - Original Art by Florence Taylor Humphreys This was a recent acquistion, and, for a while, it really stumped us. The only reference for the artist - Florence Taylor Humphreys - came from the Lancaster History organization, in Lancaster, PA, on their website, for 'Know Your Local Artists Scrapbook, 1936', a promotion for National Art Week in 1936; "The scrapbook contains articles from the “Know Your Local Artists” series published by the Lancaster New Era in 1936. The series featured outstanding artists of Lancaster County to celebrate National Art Week, 8-14 November 1936. The biographies were prepared by Ethelyn Van Leuven Browne and the portraits by Florence Taylor Humphreys" We communicated with the Director there, and she confirmed it was Florence Taylor Humphreys (whose maiden name may have been "Florence Starr Taylor"), though could not confirm whose portrait it is. It is signed by the artist "1938", and the portrait is slightly angled. It was framed some years later, in Chicago, by Flax Art & Frame, on Wabash, who boast "Service, Quality and Integrity Since 1946" on the label. If you collect Art, and, perhaps, Americana Art, which this could be classified, coming from the era is does.
