Very Desirable 1912 First Year Production Four Digit Serial Number U.S. Colt Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol Manufactured in 1912, the first official year of production for the U.S. military contract Colt Model 1911 pistols. This four digit example "5991" falls withing the range of 250 pistols (serial numbers 5,751 to 6,000) sent to the U.S. Rock Island Arsenal on September 6, 1912, as shown on page 514 of "U.S. Military Automatic Pistols: 1894-1920" by Meadows. It has fixed rounded blade front and notch rear sights, the two-line Colt patent dates and address in two blocks followed with a circled Rampant Colt behind the serration on the left of the slide, the model designation on the right of the slide, a blued barrel with "3" on the underside and small "H" at the rear, the U.S. property marking and a circled "WGP" inspection monogram on the left of the frame, and the "No" (the "o" underlined) prefix serial number on the right of the frame. Fitted with a long smooth trigger, checkered slide catch and thumb safety along with a wide spur hammer, a flat smooth mainspring housing with a lanyard loop on the base, a pair of "double diamond" pattern checkered walnut grips, and a two-tone blued magazine with a "keyhole" cut at the rear of the feed lips and a pinned lanyard loop floor plate.

Manufacturer: Colt

Model: 1911

BBL: 5 inch round

Gauge: 45 ACP

Finish: blue

Grips: walnut

Serial Number5991

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

  • Condition: Very fine, retaining 75% plus original blue finish with some silvering on the front grip strap and underside of the dust cover, some smooth grey and brown patina, a few minor spots of oxidation, light edge wear, minor handling marks, and clear markings. The grips are fine with some light compression marks in the well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent. Overall a very attractive original example of a 1912 production four digit serialized U.S. Colt Model 1911 pistol that would be difficult to improve upon!
