This Complete Deck of 54 Cards is in an exceptional state of preservation. All 54 cards are present, each featuring a different Sepia-toned Photographic Scene within a gilt oval vignette on a cream stock ground. The standard card denomination and suit indices located at the corners. The card faces depict a remarkable variety of Hawaiian subjects, including scenes of Hawaiian royalty, native life, landscapes, and notable figures of the period.
Among the most prized cards in the deck is the portrait identified as DUKE KAHANAMOKU, the celebrated Native Hawaiian swimmer and surfer who would go on to win Olympic gold medals for the United States in 1912 and 1920 and is widely regarded as the father of modern surfing. The Joker card features the Hawaiian State Coat of Arms with the motto "Ua Mau ke Ea o ka Aina i ka Pono" and the publisher imprint "Wall, Nichols Co., Ltd., Honolulu, H.I., L1994." The card edges are gilt throughout. All 54 cards are bright, clean, crisp and unworn, presenting in Choice Mint condition having no soiling, creasing, or handling wear of consequence.
The WALL, NICHOLS COMPANY, LTD. of Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands, was one of the leading commercial stationers and publishers operating in Hawaii during the Territorial period, producing a wide range of souvenir and novelty items for both the tourist trade and local consumption.
The present deck was manufactured for Wall, Nichols by THE U.S. PLAYING CARD COMPANY of Cincinnati, Ohio, the dominant American playing card manufacturer of the era, and bears that firm's copyright notice on the box. Hawaii had been formally annexed as a United States Territory in 1900, and the period roughly 1900 to 1915 saw a flourishing souvenir trade catering to visitors arriving by steamship from the mainland.
Souvenir playing card decks featuring photographic imagery were among the most popular and collectible of these tourist items, and the Hawaiian edition is among the most desirable of all regional souvenir decks produced in this period, owing to the exceptional quality and variety of its photographic imagery and its strong associations with Hawaiian royalty and culture.
