East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 18th century CE. A serene wooden figure of the Bodhisattva Guanyin, retaining layers of lacquer and gilding across its surface. The figure is depicted in full lotus position, one hand resting in the lap holding a vessel while the other - now partially missing - was likely raised in a symbolic mudra gesture. Flowing robes cascade over the body, and a crown adorns the head - signifying spiritual authority and wisdom. On the verso, a large square niche has been carved into the back - typical of Buddhist statuary of the period - intended to function as a sacred reliquary. Such niches served to consecrate the figure, often housing miniature images, scriptures, or ritual offerings to enhance its spiritual efficacy. Occasionally, they also bore dedicatory inscriptions - establishing a tangible link between the figure, its donor, and the temple or home where it was enshrined. Size: 5.25" W x 8.75" H (13.3 cm x 22.2 cm); gold quality: 8% to 13%

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection
