1899 First Edition Book titled, "The Future of the American Negro" by author Booker T. Washington, Small, Maynard & Co., Boston, Illustrated with Portrait Frontispiece of the author Booker T. Washington, Fine.
This First Edition Book measures 7.5" x 5.25" in the octavo format and is bound in the publisher's original maroon cloth with the title, "The Future of the American Negro" and the author's name "Booker T. Washington" stamped in bright gold gilt lettering to the upper board. Twin gilt-rule lines border the title panel. The top edge is trimmed and gilt. The spine shows light toning and fading consistent with age, and the corners exhibit modest bumping. The front inner hinge shows a crack from repeated reading use, a common and expected feature on well-used copies of this genuinely popular and widely read volume.
The frontispiece is a fine photographic Portrait of Washington seated with arms folded, dressed in a dark suit with bow tie, with his facsimile signature "Booker T. Washington" printed beneath the image. The paste-downs and endpapers exhibit slight expected toning and minor offsetting. Internally the text block is generally clean and tight throughout, the pages presenting well.
BOOKER T. WASHINGTON (1856-1915) was one of the most consequential African American leaders, educators, and public intellectuals of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Born into slavery in Franklin County, Virginia, Washington rose to become the founder and first principal of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama in 1881, which he built into one of the most influential Black educational institutions in American history. His philosophy of economic self-reliance, vocational training, and gradual social advancement through individual achievement. That made him the dominant figure in African American public life in the years following Reconstruction, a position he would hold until his death in 1915.
"The Future of the American Negro," published in 1899 by Small, Maynard and Company of Boston, represents one of Washington's most important early extended works, presenting his social and economic philosophy in sustained argument form and appearing just one year before his landmark autobiography "Up from Slavery" brought him to the widest national and international readership. This 1899 First Edition is a desirable example for collectors of African American history and Black literature.
