  • Provenance: N.C. Estate Inheritance
  • Dimensions: DIAMETER: 14.30 millimeters
  • Exhibited: Currently Mebane Antique Auction Gallery
  • Literature: WEIGHT: 0.75 grams, MINTAGE: 960, MINT: Philadelphia, EDGE: Plain Ron Guth: The 1871 Three-Cent Silver has a recorded mintage of 960 Proofs. A large percentage of the original mintage survived, as evidenced by the fact that PCGS alone has certified a third of them. The survival rate was helped by a hoard of "under 100" Proofs that showed up before 1964 in the John Zug estate (as reported by Walter Breen in 1988). The majority of Proofs fall into the PR63 to PR64 category, and the best examples grade out at PR67. Approximately a third of all known 1871 Trimes are Cameo Proofs, while a much smaller percentage offer a Deep Cameo appearance. Most are well-struck, though some show weakness on the knot of the ribbon that binds the arrows. Occasionally, a lintmark may be seen on one or both sides.
