George Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll served as the Secretary of State for India in Prime Minister William Gladstone's first British government. He was also an active intellectual, publishing the book Primeval Man and participating in scientific and political debates in London and the House of Lords. George John Douglas Campbell, 8th and 1st Duke of Argyll (30 April 1823 – 24 April 1900; styled Marquess of Lorne until 1847), was a Scottish polymath and Liberal statesman. He made a significant geological discovery in the 1850s when his tenant found fossilized leaves embedded among basalt lava on the Island of Mull. He also helped to popularize ornithology and was one of the first to give a detailed account of the principles of bird flight in the hopes of advancing human flight. His literary output was extensive writing on topics varying from science and theology to economy and politics. In addition to this, he served prominently in the administrations of Lord Aberdeen, Lord Palmerston, John Russell and William Gladstone. John Bright (1811–1889) was a prominent British radical politician, orator, and Quaker reformer best known for co-founding the Anti-Corn Law League and championing free trade. Earl Granville, styled Lord Leveson until 1846, was a British Liberal statesman and diplomat from the Leveson-Gower family. He is best remembered for his service as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. George William Frederick Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon (1800–1870). Eminent British diplomat and statesman of the Whig and Liberal parties. Served three times as Foreign Secretary and as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland during the devastating famine.
