On July 15, 1868, the merchants of Baltimore hosted a lavish, joint celebratory banquet at the Eutaw House. The dual purpose of this historic event was to present a complimentary banquet to John W. Garrett (President of the B&O Railroad) before his departure to Europe, and to formally honor Captain Wilhelm Vöckler and the officers of the SS Baltimore—the pioneer steamship of the newly established Baltimore and Bremen Line (North German Lloyd).
