December 30, 1861-Dated Civil War Period, Confederate Soldier's Manuscript Handwritten Letter in the 27th Virginia Infantry the famed "Stonewall Brigade" with Battle Content, Very Fine.
A well written Confederate Soldier's Letter, measures 5" x 7.75", 2 pages, dated at "Camp Stevenson" (Stevenson Depot, 5 miles northeast of Winchester, VA), by Daniel J. Hileman sent to his brother Phillip. Daniel J. Hileman, of Rockbridge County, VA, was born circa 1836, and enlisted as a Private in Co. H, 27th Virginia Infantry on July 31, 1861, and was soon promoted to Sergeant. The 27th Virginia was part of the famed "Stonewall Brigade". He was captured at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 12, 1864, and confined at Fort Delaware until released on June 15, 1865. This letter is to his brother Phillip Hileman, who served in the 41st Virginia Infantry, and was also a POW at Fort Delaware. The letter has great firsthand Civil War content regarding a recent skirmish Daniel was in, here writing of one soldier who was "shot through" and it was "instant death with him." This letter reads, in part (with spelling corrected):
"Camp Stevenson, Dec. 30th 1861 --- Dear Brother Phillip, -- I seat myself this morning for the purpose of writing you a few lines to let you know that we are all [well] at present... As James Holey is a go to start home in course of an hour or two, I would give you a full history of the skirmish that I was in on the 18, 19th, but I have not time to write much for I have to go on post in a short time as I am on guard today. I do tell you it is no fun to be where the minie balls, cannon balls... & grape shot but I got out safe & all the rest except Joshua Parks was shot through. It was instant death with him. I was sorry to hear of James McCourn's being killed out on the Allegheny Mountains... The health of the people in camp is tolerable good at present. William Hight died and his brother also about two weeks ago. It is tolerable cold down here and has been for the last week. I have not seen any Christmas this year..."
The letter is well written in easily readable brown ink on plain period wove paper with personal family content at its conclusion Signed, "Daniel j. Hileman". Complete, with a portion of the attached blank page lacking, likely used for other writings.
