Gen. George Washington's Account With The United States From 1775 to 1783 as Written by Himself is a historical facsimile book published in 1857 that reproduces the detailed, handwritten expense logs kept by George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Published primarily by John Hutchings in Brooklyn and the American Publishing Company in Hartford, this 1857 book provides a rare, transparent glimpse into the logistical and financial realities of the Revolutionary War. When George Washington accepted the role of Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army in 1775, he refused to take a formal salary. Instead, he requested only that the Continental Congress reimburse him for his exact, actual expenses. He kept two duplicate record books completely by hand throughout the eight-year war. He submitted his finalized books to the Board of Treasury for auditing on July 1, 1783. The book is a small folio format. It features a distinctive title-page portrait of Washington and lithographed facsimile pages produced by Boell & Michelin. These capture Washington's exact handwriting and columns.
